Lower Wekiva River from Katie's Landings

Green Heron at the Lower Wekiva River

Today my co-workers were meeting to have a good time and play softball. I was invited and accepted the invitation so kayaking time was not a lot. But did wake up early and had a very short paddle at the waters of one of my favorite rivers, if not my favorite: Lower Wekiva River. From start to finish a little more than three hours but distance wise not even close to three miles. Stayed close to Katie's and explored around the island just North of it. Saw many things, including a juvenile Bald Eagle and an Otter, both of them evading my camera. But it was a fun relaxing time in the river under a cloudy sky, most of the time.

Put In / Take Out: As the title of the post suggests, the put in and take out location was Katie's Landings. Please see previous posts for information about this location. Heard something about Katie's and Wilson's Landings that disturbs me. Apparently our State Governor, in his infinite wisdom, has decided that State Parks have to break even or else. Heard that there was a bid already for a private concession to take over Katie's and Wilson's. Heard even more. One person got the bid for Katie's and had planned a few things, including charging $10 for the use of the facilities. I do hope this is not true. If any of you have details please share them here or e-mail me at viewsfromourkayak@cfl.rr.com.

Already said all that needed to be said on this one. It was a quick paddle, explored the area around the island North of Katie's Landings, the river is low, and the waters are pristine. Did not see any one during the time in the water and when I left two outfitters were preparing to go out. My timing was perfect. Both crowded the small put in area with their kayaks and paddle boards but I managed to find a hole to get out of the water. That being said let us go and see the pics...
