Ritch Grissom Memorial Viera Wetlands (NKP)

Great Crested Flycatcher

Was able to rescue my last day of the Memorial Weekend. If it is true that it was not a spectacular day at the Viera Wetlands, it was not bad at all. The Great Crested Flycatcher gets the opening since it is a subject I see on rare occasions. Good or bad is my best pic ever of the little bird.

Location: This amazing place is located here: 3658 Charlie Corbeil Way, Viera, FL

My elbow is still giving me a hard time so did not want to push it kayaking. Did not want to stay at home neither so it was an easy call to go to Viera. Had a very nice day. Let us see the pics...

There is rookery in an island near the entrance. If you walk you will see it first. If you drive will see it by the end of the trip. I always walk my first round...

Found a Red Bellied Woodpecker nest. It was fun watching them. Here are a few pics...

After the nest kept walking. It was getting hotter by the minute though so decided to walk back to the parking lot and then drive around. Here are the pics of what I saw on my way to the parking area...

An aerial drama was happening high in the sky. A Red Shouldered Hawk caught a snake and a Red Winged Blackbird took exception.

Had to take another pic of a Red Bellied Woodpecker. It was so pic friendly. It was near where the Great Crested Flycatcher was...

Once in the van decided to drive to Moccasin Island Tract through the 3.5 miles road. Had to stop to allow a Yellow Rat Snake cross the road. Then, almost at the parking area for the tract, a pair of Swallow Tailed Kits performed some acrobatic show for me. At the tract a Yellow Meadowlark cooperated for a few pics...

Blue Spring & Snake Creek

Swallow- Tailed Kite
Sorry for the delay. Have not had enough free time to work the post until today. It is Thursday when am finishing the post so have forgotten most of the details I wanted to share with you so let us go to the pics.

Red Shouldered Hawk

Put In / Take Out: Blue Spring State Park (Orange City). Please check previous posts for location and other information.

Swallow Tailed Kite

This one was not a long one in terms of distance since am still recovering from the elbow tendinitis. Did paddle the Blue Spring Run and the area in front of the end of French Avenue. By the way, the vegetation has taken over and it is not passable anymore. Here are the pics....

Did check Snake Creek for a few minutes. Not many pic chances. Only the Red Shouldered Hawk is from that section. But coming out of it a Swallow Tailed Kite flew by searching for lunch. It was spectacular, at least for the bird and for me, not for the snake it caught.
