Orlando Wetlands Park (Non kayaking post)

Sand Hill Crane Family

It has been a tough weekend so far. Friday morning woke up with the news that  a loved one lost her battle against cancer. Needed to go out somewhere because have to have my mind busy. But it was supposed to rain today. Chances were 40% in the morning and 60% in the afternoon so decided not to go kayaking. After all, it was going to come down. Or so said the forecast. Went to Orlando Wetlands Park to get my fix of wildlife. I was prepared for a short walk and ended up taking an almost 4 hours hike. Rain??? If you see some of it let me know because I have not seen it.

Here is a link for information about Orlando Wetlands Park. I just realized today that there are new signs identifying the trails. Pretty cool detail. The main trail is Wetlands Blvd. Here is how it looks...

I have done the Lake Searcy Loop on previous trip. Today started the Birding Loop but had a detour.

The main trail is Wetlands Blvd.

There is not too much to say about this one. I try not to bore you with the details when it is not a kayaking trip. So will go directly to the pics...

Here took a detour and went down Limpkin Ln, that takes you to Lake Searcy. Stopped in the high ground, or Oyler Overlook. There are two rookeries that can be seen from there. Also, saw a Sora, for the second time in the morning. Ironic, have only seen that bird once or twice at the most in almost three years. Today had two sightings in different places.

While I do respect gators, am not scare of them. This one scared me. Good size reptile right there at the edge of the not so wide trail. Thought about turning around before walking by it. Luckily it did not mind my presence, and I played smart and only took a ONE pic.

Rare flower, wait...not a flower...GATOR!!!!!

Red Winged Black Bird. Wondering from where the name comes from.

The Limpkin LN took me to Vulture View. I will give you two chances to guess why they named it like that but am petty sure you only will need one.

Made it back to Wetlands Blvd and saw an eagle perched in the distance. Tried to speed up to make it to the area and take some eagle shots. Saw a large group on the trail near the eagle perched.

Looking at Alligator Alley. There is a Bald Eagle perched on a dead tree. Middle of the pic.

Of course, the eagle flew away when I was maybe a 100 feet away from a decent shot

Royal, or Caspian Tern. Have to verify.

There you will see all the pics from this and other trips. Hopefully will be able to go kayaking very soon and share with you more Views From Our Kayaks.

  1. I'm sorry about your friend. Wetlands Park is a good place to go in times like that.
    Extraordinary pictures, as always.
I rode my bike there Tuesday and noticed the signs.
