Upper Wekiva River - Little Wekiva River Adventure

Swallow Tailed Kite

I was starting to think that was going to be Swallow Tailed Kite-less for this year. My encounters with these stunning birds were fast and unexpected. Until today at the Upper Wekiva River on my way to the Little Wekiva River. Had a superb day at the river. It is a shame the rain ruined the last part but, looking at the positive, made a record time from the confluence of the Little Wekiva to Wilson's Landings.

Put In / Take Out: Wilson's Landings. 387 Malekean Trail, Sanford FL. There is no fee and the distance from where you drop the boat to the river may or may not be an issue for some. It is not too bad as I have seen worse.

There is nothing unusual to say about this trip so commentaries will be few. Started my paddle at 8 AM and was back at Wilson's Landings at 1:30 PM. Explored the Little Wekiva River for the first time ever. I believe that did paddle about 20 minutes upstream.

This section of the Wekiva River switches from covered and open areas a three or four times. It was at these open areas where the Swallow Tailed Kites showed up for my delight. It happened more than once and ended with 29 pictures of the beautiful birds Here is a sample...

Went up the Little Wekiva River for maybe 20 minutes. Not too many things to take pictures off but did see a Yellow Crowned Night Heron. The Wood Ducks were super shy.

Reached the confluence of the Little Wekiva and the Wekiva River and shortly after that the weather started to turn ugly. Made a couple of stops thinking that it was going to be OK but it did not. It came down and came down hard. Here are the few pics I was able to take before sprinting to Wilson's Landings...

Made it back to Wilson's Landings at the rain stopped as soon as I arrived there. There was an activity going on and seemed like there were not enough parking spots at the park because the attendants choose to block the Canoe Launch area. I did not have any regrets parking my minivan and blocking the way for the ones trying to leave. Sorry. The following two pics are from the entrance of the subdivision I live. It was too good to pass the chance...

And that is it for this one. I will post a few more pics on the Facebook Page. Thanks for reading and hope you come back to our next Views From Our Kayak.
