Ritch Grissom Memorial Viera Wetlands (NKP)

American Bittern

Woke up today, cooler than usual which was not a problem. Windier than usual, that is a problem. Wanted to paddle somewhere in the intracoastal but it was rough everywhere, according to the forecast. Did not want to paddle any open areas, like the St. Johns River and did not want to risk a tree falling in my path in a canopy like Rock Springs Run or the Wekiva River. I was up anyways so decided to go to the Viera Wetlands, where had a very nice walk and drive through. The opening has to be an American Bittern in flight. Period.

Glossy Ibis

This a Non Kayaking Post, NKP, so not too many comments. I did walk around twice and then drove the outer loop and to Moccasin Island Tract before going home. The Click Ponds were closed. Did not take many pics because both my batteries were running low, which surprised me. I thought that the back up was fully charged. The Crested Caracaras were seeing in the Moccasin Island Tract, as well as the American Kestrel. Missed two Bald Eagles flying over but am not complaining. Was a heck of a walk in a windy/cold morning. Here we go!!!!!

Osprey. It just captured a fish for breakfast.

  1. Why Viera Wetlands should restrict pet to owners attended vehicles:
    Pets are Prohibited
Nisqually NWR is set aside for the protection and preservation of wildlife. Please feel free to enjoy the opportunity to view wildlife and habitats but leave your pet at home. The prohibition of pets including dogs is to reduce disturbance to wildlife and habitat. There are studies that have been done that show that wildlife in the vicinity of trails, even where dogs are leashed, are negatively affected, causing lower wildlife abundance along the trail. It may be because wildlife instinctively look at dogs as predators, whether they are leashed or not.
